Core strength is intimately linked to balance, because the core muscles serve as stabilizers for the entire body. You may be shaken by a challenging yoga pose, yes, but a strong core can help prevent falls and injuries. Don’t you just love the endless parallelisms between these yoga concepts and everyday life?! I do! In life as in yoga and vice versa:
Trials and difficulties may shake us to the core but if that core is strong and stable, we will never fall apart.
So yes, a strong core is important both in body and spirit. I’m glad that Urban Ashram Yoga believes in this so much that they’ve organized a Core Bootcamp for us! Because I knew that I still have a lot of core-strengthening to do, I jumped right into the opportunity and attended the said bootcamp at their Brixton branch over the weekend and had such a great time! Of course it was pretty challenging and we were all sweating like crazy but I found it really helpful and satisfying.
The Core Bootcamp is a three-class program that aims to make students gain a “deeper and intelligent understanding of their true core”. Too bad I was only able to attend two out of the three classes due to a family event, but even with just two classes I already learned a lot.
The bootcamp started with a quick lecture on the core muscles and no, six-pack abs aren’t the only manifestations of a strong core because the core muscles go beyond that area. The morning session of Saturday was dedicated to poses that worked on the front core muscles while the afternoon session (which I unfortunately wasn’t able to attend) worked on those at the back. Sunday morning was a combination of both.
There were drills that we had to do with a partner and to me, that was one of the most enjoyable parts because it’s something we don’t get to experience in a regular yoga class.
In the two-day bootcamp, I was surprised to learn that my core muscles have grown strong and stable enough to perform some balancing poses that I used to have difficulty with two years ago. At the same time though, the bootcamp has verified the fact that there’s still so much to be worked on because there’s still a lot of poses that I couldn’t do — like the inversion being demonstrated by Nica, our teacher, on the photo above! Nope, that’s not me, haha! By the way, thank you Nica for leading the classes and for being so helpful and supportive to everyone!
Okay, here’s some good news: There’s another Core Bootcamp this weekend, May 28-29! This time it will be in Urban Ashram High Street. The Saturday classes are at 9-11am and 1-3pm. Sunday class is at 10-12nn. For more details, visit this page.
